Even with all of the new best selling books on the market, the bible remains on the list of top books that are purchased each year. Years ago, a bible was the one book that a family might own or allow in the house. To those that follow and believe in the words of the bible, it is the most important book in creation. Bibles contain religious writings that were passed down from people who spoke with God, angels, saints and Jesus Christ. There are bibles for different religions. However, the first part of the most commonly used bible is called the Old Testament, or the Torah. Jewish people follow the beliefs of the Torah as their bible.

•Bibles are named accordingly: the word bible means Holy in Latin, the traditional language that the bible was translated from. Of the 66 books within bibles, they are divided into two bible sections. The Old Testament is what Jewish people believe in. The New Testament is the part of the bible that Catholics and Christians base their religions on. The books of the bibles are said to have been writings passed down through many centuries. The Old Testament, or the Torah are supposedly written long before the bibles New testament section. The Old Testament is said to have been written between 440 and 1400 B.C., although exact dates are not known. The bibles books of the New Testament were likely written between 50 and 95 A.D.

•The two sections in the bible are very different, since one section was written before stories of Jesus Christ were written. Jewish people, who follow this Old Testament of the bible believe that the true messiah has not come yet. Their part of the bible does not mention Jesus as a messiah. The New Testament believes that Jesus Christ was the messiah and son of God. That is why the two sections of the bible are very different. Both agree on some very important stories, such as the creation of the world by God. Christians believe that the bible was written by people as they were speaking directly with God. That means that Christian bibles are quite literally thought to be the word of God, written with another hand.

•Today, people use bibles in other ways besides simply reading them to gain religious wisdom and learn how to live a righteous life. It is very common for people to write significant deaths, births and wedding anniversaries on a cover of the bible. It is the size of the bible that can intimidate many people from trying to read the book in its entirety. However, it has been proven that the entire bible can be read in a year if one reads the bible for ten minutes each night.

Bibles have been printed up in thousands of different ways. Some bibles are no bigger than a small finger while other bibles are massive affairs with ornate writing. Different section of the bible such as the psalms, may be read quite often during a church sermon while others are not.
